perspective

Here's a question for the other bloggers out there: Let's say your blog focuses mainly on one or two topics and you rarely stray from those themes and you do a pretty good job of skirting nicely around your personal life or anything remotely emotional.

And then something absolutely horribly tragic happens. And it makes everything you write about and think about feel really, really stupid and trivial and selfish.

So what do you do? Do you continue as normal because getting into anything personal is TMI and just too painful? Or do you address it and risk revealing too much?

All I know is now Vineman seems like nothing.

I'm not a blogger, just a reader and I respect your writing, no matter the depth or levity of its content. I know it sounds cliche, but do whatever feels right at this moment. I'm sorry for whatever is causing this new perspective as it sounds terribly serious.

Thanks, lady. Got some bad news yesterday about a close friend. Makes everything else seem extremely trivial.

If something horrible happened to you, what would you want your friends to do? Would you want them to keep jabbering about random stuff? Would you want them to express public condolences? Everyone is different, so I can't speak for you or your the people affected by the tragedy. Sometimes some levity and normalcy is good; sometimes it's a good thing to remember that life still has great things in it. And sometimes it's good to stop and remember what's really important; sometimes a change of focus is good.

The bottom line is that there is no answer. But I think there's a lot to be said for instinct. Your instinct was to post something titled "perspective" and to give a hint without saying too much. Go with your gut feeling: If feel like writing something sad, do it. If you feel like writing something silly, do that, too. If anyone judges you, it's because they haven't figured out how to handle tragedy -- which means it's their struggle, not yours.

(hugs) I hope you are doing okay. I tend to keep personal stuff off my blog. But I agree with Layla -- whatever feels right for you is the right thing for you to do.
